Workshop Details
Join us for a two-day art workshop designed to introduce & guide participants through the basic design elements of collage, taught by Melissa Cearley. Part of the Marking the Moment Series, this art based class will focus on the elements of collage art such as focal point, line, balance, contrast, and rule of thirds.
Designed for all skill levels, the workshop will use watercolor paper as the foundation for the understanding and practice of this 10th century art form. Participants will be gluing and sticking together paper, personal items, found items, along with provided items & other ephemera to create an expressive collage.
The workshop will discuss the organic nature of collage art and how the use of personal items such as old tickets, letters, envelopes, an old book, or anything of interest can create art. By the end of the two-days, participants will have their own unique art to take home along with the knowledge of this classic artform.
The dates of the workshop correlate with the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene and were chosen by the KMP Team deliberately.
“Collage art is a way to create beauty out of discarded, often damaged items. The symbolism of the devastation caused by Helene not only to the city of Augusta and to the personal lives and property of so many, but also to the legacy of KMP which will be reflected and honored in this workshop. The creation of art through the lens of collage work is being presented by one of Kat’s trusted artist friends, Melissa Cearley, we believe this is a fitting way to commemorate our loss while at the same time celebrate our bright future.”
- Mary Linda Lamar, Business Development Director, Kat McCall Papers
The registration fee of $150 per participant includes collage supplies.
Class size is limited to 10 participants. Registration fees are non-refundable but can be transferred to another participant. This is a two-day workshop.
About the Artist - Melissa Cearley
With a love for history, art and all things paper, Melissa is a 2D/3D contemporary artist with work shown in GA, NC & VA . Born in Florida, raised in Texas, placed in Augusta, Georgia for 22 out of the last 26 years, she is married to “Dr. D”, with three children Jane, Anne & Will, plus the one & only Ridglea dog. A recent “empty-nester”, owner and Artist at Studio2025 Art Studio & Gallery, Melissa enjoys all things beautiful.
“When she could have dismissed my artistic endeavors, Kat McCall instead, most graciously lifted me, encouraged me, supported me, and shared some of her watercolor papers with me for my work, knowing the value those papers had to me. We never got a chance to circle back around when she had asked me if she could “pick my brain” about how to use paper/collage in her work, but I feel certain we would’ve had so much fun together! I know I would have learned a TON from her as an artist, but in those brief encounters I learned most about the impact of grace and kindness. It is truly a pure joy and honor to offer this workshop with her in mind.”
